OUR History

The Historic King Drive Business Improvement District (BID) No. 8 is one of more than 30 Business Improvement Districts and Neighborhood Improvement Districts serving Milwaukee. Established in 1992 by visionary property owners, the BID was created to ensure the long-term success, vitality, and sustainability of businesses along Milwaukee's historic King Drive corridor.

For more than three decades, the BID has remained committed to preserving the corridor's rich cultural heritage while advancing economic opportunity and community prosperity. Many of the priorities established in the original operating plan continue to guide our work today.

In 2023, the Historic King Drive BID Board of Directors launched a strategic planning process that established a renewed vision for the future of King Drive: a vibrant, inclusive destination where its unique history is celebrated and shared while creating opportunities for businesses, residents, and visitors to thrive.

The planning process also inspired a refreshed brand identity centered around Pride & Promise, honoring the original "King's Promise" established in 1993 and reaffirming our commitment to the district's future.

Today, our work is guided by a renewed mission to create an authentic, safe, clean, and vibrant district that supports profitable businesses and meaningful community experiences. The Board and staff are committed to being proactive, collaborative, and responsive as we implement strategies that strengthen King Drive for future generations.

The 2026 Operating Plan builds upon these long-standing priorities while introducing new opportunities that benefit businesses, property owners, and the broader Milwaukee community.

More than a commercial corridor, Historic King Drive is a place where history, culture, commerce, and community come together—and a place all Milwaukee residents can be proud to call their own.
